Where We Actually Work

A thin, opinionated slice of where TFF members actually work — one or two picks per category, not a mega-list. For the full 60+ café and workspace catalogue, use [Michelle Fang’s Starter Guide to SF](https://x.com/michelleefang/status/1737550592330146231) (credit to her — it’s the canonical list and she keeps refreshing it).

Jargon: Day pass = pay-per-day desk access, no membership. Referral membership = an existing member must vouch for you.

Notes on each

Canopy — three boutique SF locations; memberships from about $550/month. Quieter and more design-forward than WeWork; fine to bring a VC here. [placeholder — TFF vouched list to be filled by members]

Day passes — Deskpass aggregates SF spaces; marketplace rates run roughly $14–29/day (WeWork’s own day pass is ~$29). Cheaper than guilt-buying $18 of coffee, and you get a call booth.

SHACK15 — social club + coworking at the Ferry Building; ~$2,000/year and you need a member referral. The value is the room, not the desk: founders, VCs, and their events calendar. Ask in the TFF Slack — someone can refer you. [placeholder — TFF vouched list to be filled by members]

Cafés — SF’s default free workspace. See etiquette below. TFF member picks: [placeholder — TFF vouched list to be filled by members]. Michelle Fang’s guide has the full 60+ list with WiFi/outlet notes.

Hacker Dojo (Mountain View) — 501(c)(3) community hackerspace at 855 Maude Ave; ~$150/month, 24/7 access, 6,000 sq ft, 300+ members. The South Bay’s best cost-to-community ratio. Peninsula founders also use library study rooms (free) for calls. [placeholder — additional South Bay picks from members]

Co-living common rooms — if you’re in a founder co-living house, the common room after 8pm PT is the best free office for IST-overlap calls (9:30am India). Nobody else wants it at that hour.

The realities nobody puts on the website

  • WiFi: café WiFi is fine for docs, bad for demos. Never run a customer demo or investor call on café WiFi — use a booked room or your hotspot.
  • Call booths: every coworking space has too few. Book morning slots the day before; 8–11am PT (customer-call hours) sell out.
  • Meetings: cafés are for 1:1 casual coffees only. Anything with a deck needs a booked room — SHACK15, your coworking space, or a VC’s borrowed conference room (they offer; take them up on it).

Café etiquette (this is the whole ask)

  • Buy something every ~2 hours. A laptop seat is rented with purchases.
  • No calls at communal tables. Take calls outside or don’t take them.
  • One seat, one bag. Don’t camp a 4-top at lunch rush.
  • Headphones always; ask before plugging into a shared outlet strip.
  • Some cafés ban laptops on weekends or evenings (an Oakland café famously grew sales doing it) — respect the sign, it’s why the café still exists.

Do this now

  • ☐ Buy one day pass this week in each neighborhood you’re considering before signing any membership
  • ☐ Ask the TFF Slack for a SHACK15 referral if serendipity > desk for your stage
  • ☐ Book call booths for your customer-call mornings 24 hours ahead
  • ☐ Bookmark Michelle Fang’s Starter Guide for the full café list
  • ☐ Add your own vouched spots to the TFF placeholder list

Nobody tells you

  • The membership you need changes with stage: pre-customers, buy serendipity (club tier); in sales mode, buy call booths (coworking); heads-down building, a café rotation plus a co-living common room is genuinely enough.
  • Most SF VCs will lend portfolio (and even non-portfolio) founders a conference room for an important customer meeting — you just have to ask. It also reads better than a café.
  • The best networking at any coworking space happens at the coffee machine between 9:30 and 10:30am, not at the official events.
