The SF↔India Travel Playbook
The repeatable checklist for the 2–4 India trips a year you’ll actually take — routes, booking timing, jet lag, documents, and customs, both directions.
Routes as of July 2026
The Pakistan airspace closure (April 2025) blew up the nonstop map. Current state:
| Route | Status (July 2026) | Typical duration |
| SFO→DEL, Air India | 10x weekly, but outbound makes a ~90-min refueling stop in Kolkata (you stay on board); DEL→SFO mostly nonstop | ~17–19 hr out / ~15–16 hr back |
| SFO→BLR, Air India nonstop | Discontinued Feb 27, 2026 (airspace); may return if restrictions ease | — |
| SFO→BOM, Air India nonstop | Discontinued Feb 28, 2026 | — |
| One-stop via Gulf (Emirates/DXB, Qatar/DOH, Etihad) | Best coverage to BLR/BOM/HYD/MAA; strong products | ~21–24 hr |
| One-stop via East Asia (Singapore/SIN, ANA-JAL/TYO, Cathay/HKG) | Good for BLR/MAA/DEL; SIN→BLR is a short hop | ~22–25 hr |
| One-stop via Europe (Lufthansa/FRA, Air France/CDG) | Fine for DEL/BOM; watch short connections | ~20–23 hr |
Fares (as of mid-2026, economy round trip): roughly $1,000–1,400 SFO↔BLR/MAA on Gulf/Singapore carriers in normal months; SFO↔DEL sometimes dips to $650–900. December (Dec 10–Jan 5) spikes to $1,800–2,500+ — this is the NRI rush.
When to book: 2–3 months out for normal trips; book December travel by August–September. Set Google Flights alerts on your two home-city routes permanently.
Jet-lag protocol for founders who work on landing
India is +12.5 hours from California — the worst possible shift. The direction rules:
Flying SFO→India (eastward-ish, advance your clock): - 3 days before: shift sleep 30–60 min earlier each night. - On landing: morning outdoor light, 20–30 min before 10am local. Avoid bright light after 8pm. - Eat on local meal times from meal 1, even if not hungry — food entrains the body clock. - Melatonin 0.5 mg at local bedtime for 3–5 nights (low dose works as well as 5 mg).
Flying India→SFO (westward, delay your clock): - Easier direction. On landing: get evening light — walk after dinner, sit near windows late. - Stay up until at least 9:30pm local no matter what. The 6pm crash is the enemy; caffeine cutoff 2pm. - First morning: outdoor light can wait until mid-morning; don’t blast yourself at 6am.
Working rule: schedule no important calls in the first 36 hours either direction. Day 2 afternoon is when your brain returns.
Carry-on checklist — SFO → India
- Passport + valid US visa stamp (see re-entry note below), OCI/Indian passport for spouse/kids as applicable
- If your visa stamp is expired: your renewal appointment confirmation and full petition paperwork
- Prescription meds in original packaging + doctor’s letter
- Gifts: stay under India’s duty-free limit — ₹75,000 (~$875) of goods under Baggage Rules 2026 (effective Feb 2, 2026), plus one new laptop duty-free (a second laptop counts against the ₹75,000)
- India customs one-liner: gold jewellery allowance is 40g (women) / 20g (men) by weight, jewellery only — bars and coins get taxed; excess attracts a flat ~10% duty under the 2026 rules
Carry-on checklist — India → SFO
- Passport with unexpired visa stamp matching your current status — an approval notice (I-797) alone doesn’t board you; the stamp does. If your stamp expired, you needed a consulate appointment this trip.
- I-797 approval notice original, employment/company evidence, recent pay stubs — CBP can ask
- 3–6 month med supply with prescriptions; no more than 90-day supply per drug is the safe rule for US entry (needs verification)
- Food: packaged/sealed only, declare everything agricultural — declaring is free, not declaring is a fine
- Homemade ghee/pickles/sweets: sealed and declared usually fine; meat and fresh produce never
Airport notes
- SFO international arrivals: Terminal A/G; immigration for visa holders can run 30–90 min at peak (evening Asia arrival banks). Global Entry is worth it once eligible — H-1B/O-1 holders can apply (needs verification of current eligibility for Indian citizens).
- US re-entry: answer CBP questions simply — company name, role, where you live. Carry the paperwork; don’t volunteer extra.
- India arrival: fill the customs declaration honestly if over limits; the green channel with a bag of undeclared electronics is how phones get confiscated and NRIs get flagged.
Do this now
- ☐ Set permanent Google Flights price alerts: SFO↔your home city, ±3 days
- ☐ Book any December India trip before the end of September
- ☐ Check your visa stamp expiry vs your next planned India trip — if it expires first, plan the consulate appointment into the trip
- ☐ Build a saved packing checklist (documents both directions) in your notes app
- ☐ Buy 0.5 mg melatonin tablets to keep in your travel kit
Nobody tells you
- The “nonstop to Bangalore/Mumbai” era from SFO paused in early 2026 — plans and blogs written before then are wrong. Check current status every trip; Air India says nonstops return if Pakistan airspace reopens.
- Your visa stamp, not your status, controls re-entry. Founders have flown home for a wedding and been stuck 6+ weeks waiting for a consulate slot. Never leave the US without either a valid stamp or a booked appointment and buffer time.
- Flying west (India→SFO) is biologically easier than flying east — schedule the fundraise meetings after the return leg, not after the outbound one, when a trip gives you the choice.
