Navigating SF Culture

Thriving

The Bay Area startup scene has its own rhythm. Small tweaks in how you interact can make a huge difference:

-Small talk starters that actually work
-The “don’t pitch in the first conversation” rule
-Meeting etiquette with VCs & founders
-Top cultural shocks Indians often face

☁️ The SF Starter Pack — Are You REALLY Ready?

“Karl the Fog” isn’t just a meme.

Always bring a jacket—even in July! If you think you don’t need it, you will.Weather shifts every 5 blocks. If you don’t like it, just walk a few more!

🤐 Unspoken Rules & Local Etiquette

Unwritten Rules Every Newcomer Must Know

Never say “Frisco” or “San Fran.” Locals call it “SF” or “the City. "Don’t stare at unusual public behavior; just keep walking, headphones in. On public transit: stand right/walk left, yield to elderly/parents, headphones on, don’t talk! Never touch the BART pole with your actual hand if you can help it. Never leave anything (even a charging cable) visible in your parked car—break-ins are rampant!

🤝 Community Culture — Quirks & Welcome Rituals

SF is fiercely diverse: you’ll meet first-gen immigrants, creatives, and techies—all at the same café.
“Bring your own six-pack” is unspoken party etiquette; always show up with something to share.
It’s normal to queue for great food or coffee, even 30 minutes for a croissant; the wait is The SF Experience!
